For Immediate Release:

Adam Baumgold Gallery presents Remote Control an exhibition of paintings by Robin Tewes from November 2nd through December 8th, 2012. Robin Tewes paints pristine and intimately-scaled interiors: at first glance these detailed rooms appear ordinary, but on closer inspection nothing is really what it seems. The space that surrounds the people and objects in her paintings takes on an aspect of the subconscious, with words and images scratched into the walls that surround them. Repeated imagery, such as bricks, plants, crumpled paper, and windows, reflect the disquietude that lurks in the quotidian routines of contemporary life.

The paintings in Remote Control are idiosyncratic, psychologically-charged tableaux. Another Tasteful Discussion of Contemporary Art (Iraq War Camouflage), 2012, is part of an ongoing series of paintings where the same elegantly dressed characters sit in a room with their "new acquisition" - in this case, a painting of the urban camouflage used in the war in Iraq. This new trophy is at an uncomfortable emotional distance from the harsh realities of the battlefield.

The Art of Happiness #3, 2011, is about Diane, a woman who is comfortable in her own skin, proud of her home and content in her life. On her walls is a contemporary art collection that she would not have chosen for herself. Tewes questions the real meaning of beauty and taste, making the fine art world more accessible and celebrating an ordinary person.

Peaceful Transition of Power, 2010, is a painting of the artist's identical twin nieces, and their dogs from the same litter, proudly posing in front of a Picasso painting. The title relates to the possibility of change, hope and a different perspective. Included in the exhibition are portraits of the artist's mother that were painted shortly before her death, which feature her in a transitory, ethereal state.

This is Robin Tewes's second solo exhibition at the gallery. Her work has been exhibited at MoMA, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Drawing Center, The Corcoran, and P.S.1. Robin Tewes has been the recipient of an Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, and two New York Foundation for the Arts fellowships for painting. Her work is included in numerous museums and public collections. Robin Tewes lives and works in New York City.
