ANNA SOMMER

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ANNA SOMMER
Drawing Collages
March 20 - April 26, 2008

Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the first U.S. solo exhibition of Zurich based artist Anna Sommer from March 20 through April 26, 2008. Using a cut paper method mixed with drawing techniques, Sommer creates vivid and darkly funny tableaux.

The exhibition will include the series “Saturday Night,” 2007 - an eight page story on a recurrent Sommer theme - playful relationships where one partner strays and is discovered by the other partner in a humorous, turnabout, fair play scenario. Another story, “The Lumberjack’s Widow,” 2008 is a fairy tale battle of the sexes. In addition, there are a number of anthropomorphized animal collages, with animals couple dressed up as people and acting with all the silliness of their human counterparts.

Featured in the exhibition will be the entire series of collages from Anna Sommer’s book “Honigmond” (Honeymoon), 1998 - a very sad tale of a wedding and marriage of promise that concludes in a devastatingly tragic way. Also included will be the artist’s “naughty” ink on paper drawings of sexual situations that are as pecular and touching as they are witty and humorous.

Anna Sommer was born in Aarau, Switzerland in 1968. Her collages and drawings have been exhibited worldwide and her work was recently included in the exhibition “Toy Comix” at The Museum of Decorative Arts in Paris. She has been featured in many comics such as “Strapazin,” “Lapin,” “Vibrations” and others. Sommer was included in the exhibition “Telling Tales: Contemporary Women Cartoonists,” curated by Dan Nadel in 2006 at the gallery. Sommer’s collage books include “Damen Dramen” (Day Dreaming), 1996, “Honigmond,” 1998, “Amourettes,” 2002, and “Portrait d’Ari la Nuit,” among others.

The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:30 P.M. For additional information, please contact Adam Baumgold at (212)861-7338, or at abaumgold@aol.com.
