For Immediate Release:

. . .Adam Baumgold Gallery presents Locations, a group exhibition of work that explores a sense of place and position. The selected works consider locations distant and near, familiar and imaginary, intimate and vast. The exhibition will include 41 artists working in a broad range of media: Richard Artschwager, Olive Ayhens, Amy Bennett, Elisheva Biernoff, Bette Blank, John Borowicz, Charles Burns, John Button, Adam Dant, Stuart Davis, Elvis Studio, Rafael Ferrer, Michael Flanagan, Renée French, Arnold Friedman, Ewan Gibbs, George Grosz, Richard Haas, Josephine Halvorson, Charles Kanwischer, Alex Katz, Jill Kerwick, Vivienne Koorland, David Korty, Julian LaVerdiere/Paul Myoda, Liz Livensperger, Cyrilla Mozenter, Mairead O'hEocha, Gerhard Richter, Ed Ruscha, Seth, Eve Sonneman, Alec Soth, Saul Steinberg, Scott Teplin, Robin Tewes, Wayne Thiebaud, Corinne von Lebusa, Chris Ware, and B. Wurtz.

. . .Richard Artschwager's Locations, 1969 is a set of small, ovoid forms ("blps," for example) that can be placed in any arrangement, inside or outside of their box. In this playful version of minimalism, the sculpture calls attention to the architecture and mood of the space it is exhibited in. Saul Steinberg's iconic drawing View of the World From 9th Avenue, 1981 gives picture-form to the feeling that the city of New York is at the center of the world. Similarly, B. Wurtz upends our sense of scale and hierarchy in his sculpture Solarsystem, 1984. Using modest, everyday objects that might otherwise be overlooked (scraps of metal, rubber balls, pegboard) he assembles a model of the solar system-compressing the cosmos into the space of a few feet.

. . .Chris Ware invites viewers to cut out and assemble a 3-dimensional model of the building at the center of his recent graphic novel Building Stories. With a stray shoe and pair of underwear on the floor and a stack of dishes in the kitchen, the finished sculpture conveys a sense of the passage of time and life lived in a Chicago building. By contrast, the painted cardboard walls and opaque windows of buildings like The Royal Dominion, 2009 by Seth locate the viewer in a setting that is neither in the past nor the present, but a certain distance off from reality. These gray structures and his pen and ink skyline drawing embrace a gritty kind of whimsy touched with the thin wash of regret. In his sculpture My Home, 166 Avenue A with Self and Pigeon Coop, 2003, Anton Van Dalen uses the rhythm of the repeated black rectangles of his building's windows and black squares of his pigeons' coop to draw a connection between his own home and the home of his birds. The building, like a body, becomes a protective shell around something more ethereal within.

. . .Eve Sonneman, in her Polaroid Diver on Lunar Eclipse, 1988, superimposes an underwater scene onto the moon to surreal effect. The photograph Phantom Towers, 2002 by Julian LaVerdiere and Paul Myoda captures the ghost image of their illuminated projection of the twin towers on the anniversary of 9/11. In Bette Blank's painting San Remo Night, 2008 a fantastical mélange of comic-book heroes and real characters abound in and around the famed building.
