ART ON ART
May 17 - June 25, 2011

...........Adam Baumgold Gallery presents the exhibition "Art on Art" from May 17 through June 25, 2011. The exhibition will feature drawings, paintings and sculpture by 28 artists that reference art and other artworks, transforming them within these artists' own signature styles and motifs. These are reverential interpretations, and not concerned with direct appropriation. The artists included in the exhibition are Chris Ware, Marilyn Minter, Richard Prince, Rafael Ferrer, Saul Steinberg, John Wesley, Tom Burckhardt, Molly Springfield, Tom Wesselmann, Deborah Kass, Robin Tewes, Mark Kostabi, William Powhida, Ray Johnson, George Deem, Joe Brainard, Duncan Hannah, Dan Fischer, Leidy Churchman, Andrew Grassie, Adam Dant, John Clem Clarke, Amer Kobaslija and Simon Linke.

...........Included in the exhibition is Chris Ware's "Rusty Brown - Pop Art," 2000, that recalls the roots of Pop Art within the pulp medium of comics. Marilyn Minter's silkscreen on aluminum "Hands Dumping," 1989, repackages the messiness of creative work within a clean flat rendering in nostalgic colors. An artist who reconfigures the masterworks of his predecessors, Rafael Ferrer's "All the Time Everywhere,"
2007, plays cubism off the prism of global culture. John Wesley's Untitled (Bird, Fish, Cloud), 1981, echoes the cataloging method of natural history of Audobon or Hokusai. Robin Tewes' "Solitary Confinement" compares the solitary effort of the creative act to childbirth - ideas, inspiration, visions from life, are filtered through the artist and evolve as works of art. Joe Brainard's Untitled (Easel), 1975, makes light of the romantic notion of the artist's confrontation with the blank canvas, by cutting out a hole where the surface should be. Ray Johnson seamlessly weaves his own iconic imagery with snipets of Warhol and Duchamp works in his collages. Deborah Kass's "4 Barbra's (Jewish Jackie Series)," 1992, transposes a Warhol classic changing the characters and ethnicity. Leidy Churchman's "La Pipe," 2010, wittily disputes the Magritte conclusion about representation and reality. Richard Prince's Untitled (woman/DeKooning woman), 2008, humorously re-genders a page from a Dekooning monograph alongside an innocent drawing of a girl.

...........Also included in the exhibition is John Clem Clarke's painting "Chardin: Still Life with Plums," 1970, a photo-realist reworking of Chardin's masterpiece currently at the Frick Museum. William Powhida's text drawing "Comments," 2009, is an autobiographical remark on the current art world and it's career reward system. Simon Linke's paintings elevate Artforum ads to the status of art by building a painterly surface of impasto over them. Andrew Grassie's "ICA - Surfacing: Contemporary Drawing," 1998, draws back to consider the rarified context in which art is presented. Tom Burckhardt's "Sculpture Stand," 2005, recreates the tool of freshman sculpture class in cardboard. Duncan Hannah's painting "After Balthus," 2011, recreates a Balthus pose with contemporary directness while Amer Kobaslija's "Northern Light I," 2010, takes a bird's eye view of Balthus' studio. George Deem's "Woman with Water Pitcher," 2002, substitutes a single corner of the Vermeer masterpiece for the whole, suggesting that every detail of the original artwork contains its essential character and the fragmentary nature of the modern work of art. Mark Kostabi's "Suicide by Modernism," 2011 speaks about the frustration of trying to be original in the face of art history- we see an abject artist hanging himself on a Calder Mobile dangling with art icons.

...........The gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 to 5:30 P.M. For additional information, please contact Adam Baumgold at (212) 861-7338, or at abaumgold@aol.com.
